The brief

Natural parks, beauty spots, reserves, natural monuments and protected landscapes spread across the whole territory, each with its own history of accumulated signs. The brief was not to design a sign: it was to write the standard that lets any body produce consistent signs for decades, with criteria for accessibility and for fitting into the landscape.

The solution

Solid timber and steel, two materials that age gracefully and that the park itself can replace. On them, a yellow field that reads from a distance in any light and a family of fauna and flora pictograms drawn with the same stroke weight. The guidelines set typologies, sizes, heights, reading distances and construction breakdowns.

Welcome marker of the Parc natural del Prat Cabanes-Torreblanca, shot from a low angle on a slender wooden post against the sky.
Landmark marker. Entrance sign to the protected area.
Wooden post with three route waymarking signs, with distances and pictograms, photographed side-on among pines.
Wayfinding sign. Routes, distances and pictograms.
Page 2.1 of the manual, landmark marker: 1:16 scale, uses, location and a hiker’s silhouette to show the real scale of the sign.
The guidelines. Spec sheet for the landmark marker.
Interpretive panel with the park’s public-use map, mounted on two wooden posts in a pine-wood clearing.
Interpretive panel. Public-use map of the area.
